Book Plan

At this point, I think I'm going to make my book the standard landscape size (8"x10") on the Blurb website. Basically, I'm trying to capture and convey the beauty of the plant and animal species native to the Florida panhandle. I don't plan to use a lot of text in the book aside from maybe the species names and other basic descriptions. I think I'm going to probably have the background of the pages black, not totally sure yet. I didn't see any other options on the Blurb website, but I'm guessing the pages will be glossy, and if the budget permits, I want the book to be a hardback. My ideas of what this thing is going to be are still evolving.

  1. Gabe, What a cool idea! I love the photos. Ive never seen some of those flowers. The stick photo had me looking at it a little longer but oddly it fits. Im really excited to see what else you find. I like it. Great job. I dont see anything that I feel I need to address.

  2. Gabe - I love the pictures, the colors are so vibrant. The idea is wonderful. It will be interesting to see what animals and plants you post pictures of and how the animals will react to having their pictures taken. I think the black background will show off the pictures really well, and glossy paper will just add to the brillance of color.

  3. This is beautiful ! Kudos on such lovely photos. Your eye for color shows even outside of your series. The idea to include species names would be lovely. Because its such a small bit of information, its inclusion must be given careful aesthetic consideration.

  4. Nice site! You have a real eye for flower compositions. They all are really beautifully composed and edited. Your site reminds me of those plant identification books, the classic kind with hand drawn illustrations, but your flowers are captured in a modern fashion- i love both styles, but they seem a little disconnected. In your book, I think it would be so great to create a graphic element from the text description of the flowers instead of the traditional caption approach. I'll list an example of what I'm thinking because I'm not very good at describing what i'm thinking right now haha. Your book dimensions sound perfect for this project, looking forward to another botany lesson :)

  5. I love the background of your blog, and the blog itself is very masculine compared to the flower photos, which is nice. The photos are very bright and beautiful. I think your idea for the book is good, because the simplicity of it will definitely highlight the photos. I think it would also be interesting if you including the names of the plants somewhere by the photos.

  6. Gabe,
Your book idea is really interesting! I really enjoy your background and your site. It all goes very nicely together. For your actual book I think it would be cool to incorporate this background somewhere. I also enjoy how sharp and scientific your pictures look. They also go nicely with your over all idea. Im excited to see more.

  7. This is an awesome concept! Definitely something I, a native Floridian, can appreciate. Very cool background image; I would even say you could use images like that in your book somewhere, maybe to help the images you take stick out. As far as the images themselves go, these are amazing quality photos. The Rudbeckia hirta and Florida Seashore Grasses images are two of the best ones in my opinion, but they are all very well composed. No complaints there. I would say adding species names and brief descriptions might be a good idea so I'd stick with that. I guess just make sure it comes off more as an artist book than just a strict information book. Native animal photos might be a little harder to come by, but if you think you can do it, I'd say go for it. So far, very impressive!

  8. Lovely images-- well composed and excellent color. However this idea serves the viewer as a document--one that one could find in the library. While that is awesome, it is different from our goals in this class. In the context of this class, your job is to share an artful take on your experience with these objects/places/plants. You are to photograph as an artist, not so much a scientist. See the difference?

Easily put: It is not so much what you photograph, it is how and why you photograph it. How can you transform these documents into sharing your walks/experiences/thoughts? Perhaps you remove them from thier locations and photograph them with extreme lighting... look here:

Perhaps you record a story and include a CD.

Perhaps you juxtapose these images with personal images, figure out a way to link them,
